Beal led the Fundamentalist Fellowship to leave the Northern Baptist Convention and form the Conservative Baptist movement. However, he remained with the Conservative Baptists when the fundamentalists left.

Rod Bell, president of the FBFI, was on the board of Bob Jones University and a close friend of the Joneses. This led many BJU alumni to join the FBFI.
