Unspeakable Sorrow
Weep with those that weep (Romans 12:15)
There are times when deep sorrow is right and righteous. This is one.
Our hearts broke as we watched the news this week. This one hit home. It’s not that we don’t mourn over the loss of life at a nightclub or a concert, but this one happened on what clearly looks like our turf. The Covenant School looks a lot like—almost exactly like—our schools. These are believers, these are kids like our kids and grandkids. These teachers are like our teachers.
We wept—easily on this one.
We shouldn’t be so different in how we view the loss of life. We should weep with all those who lose loved ones unjustly. Paul’s admonition, in this case, is not to “buck up” those that weep, or cast political commentary on the situation that leads to the sorrow. There are moments when it is appropriate just to weep and lay all politicization and moralizing aside.
There will be time later to analyze, to consider what could be done to prevent such tragedies.
But for now, we weep, and we pray for our country that has come under the judging hand of God placing the most innocent among us in harm’s way. With true humility and repentance, we lift our broken hearts to Him. We run to the only One who can truly save our souls.
For those who have endured such loss, our prayers rise to heaven on your behalf, and our tears mingle with yours before the throne of heaven.
