The Battle is Not Done

This is my Father’s world:
Oh, let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the ruler yet.

This is my Father’s world,
The battle is not done:
Jesus who died shall be satisfied
And earth and Heav’n be one.

So, of all days to protest FOR abortion “rights”, Mother’s Day has to be the worst. It makes about as much sense as “Defund the Police” as a campaign slogan.

The leak of all leaks happened this week. If you have been living under a rock, you may not have heard that someone—a clerk, a justice, we do not know—leaked to Politico.com the substance of the draft of the Supreme Court opinion on Roe v Wade expected later this summer. This has never happened before. Such a leak is almost impossible to comprehend and carries vast ramifications for the court and our government.

The substance of the draft is significant. It outright overturns Roe v Wade and the later Casey ruling, declaring them unconstitutional—which they are.

Overturning Roe v Wade has been the Holy Grail of the religious right for all of my life—at least since I have been old enough to understand anything about politics. Overturning Roe is like the second coming of Jesus to religious right pols.

Hold on a sec. Tap the brakes.

Just because this draft has been “outed” does not mean this is how the final ruling will read. Only fools start their victory dance on the five-yard line. Even if Roe is overturned, the ruling only returns decisions on abortion back to the states. If all 50 states outlawed all abortions, which will not happen, people will still seek abortions.

While the abortion issue is a real and significant problem in our nation, is a symptom of a deeper problem. The salt has lost its savor.

Laws should reflect true justice and protect the weakest and most vulnerable, but no law will stand in the face of a godless populace bent on rebellion against its Creator. If there is no change in the individual hearts of people, this turn of events will just serve to prompt more backlash and more hatred.

We are in an opportune moment as believers, but we must seize it. The political left, which clearly stands opposed to obedient biblical Christianity, has significantly over-played its hand. Even unbelievers like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel are beginning to sound like conservatives. I believe that there are many people in our general population who are now doubting the anti-God propaganda that they have been fed all of their lives. They might be more open to the true gospel of Jesus Christ now more than ever before.

This is an urgent moment. This is a moment of opportunity, but we must be salt and light.

There are two aspects to being effective salt and light.

To be the salt of the earth, we have to speak the gospel.

And the content of what we speak must be a clear gospel message.

When God truly saves people, He changes their perspectives on nearly everything in life. God is doing this right now. It does not take years for a person’s thinking to change. It can happen almost overnight. We have a biblical example in Saul of Tarsus whose view of everything completely reversed.  Our purposes are not political, they are evangelistic. The political positions are just a by-product.

To be the salt of the earth we must earnestly live our faith.

Weak, half-hearted, selfish, sinful Christianity is powerless. If we are not truly holy, if we do not walk with God, we will do more damage to the gospel than help.  We will not have the blessing of the Holy Spirit and the impact that we have on new believers will be counterproductive.

We need a revival in order to have an awakening.

We have gone the way of the people who went after baal, in the Old Testament. Please God, turn us around! We have also let the schools teach evolution.
